This portfolio demonstrates my knowledge in the following areas as they relate to the teaching of reading:
1. Foundations of Language and Literacy
2. Instructional Strategies and Curriculum Materials
3. Assessment, Diagnosis, and Evaluation
4. Creating a Literate Environment
5. Professionalism and Professional Development
6. Organizing Strategies for Reading and Writing Instruction
In my time putting this portfolio together, several things stood out to me. The first thing that I noticed was that many of my artifacts could be used in multiple categories. This shows that each category is not used in isolation, but rather all categories overlap and affect each other. All of these skills must be used simultaneously to be an effective reading instructor. Another thing that stood out to me was that all of these categories involved working in cooperation with other people. It may be other educators, volunteers, or parents that are included in different steps of the process at different times, but the communication has to be open and everyone should be working together to reach the same goal. Lastly, I noticed how many of these things I do as an embedded part of my teaching. After completing this portfolio, I’m able to see how much I have learned while completing my Master’s Degree and how much this knowledge has impacted my teaching.
