5.3 local, state, and federal policies related to reading and writing instruction and assessment.
Education is constantly changing and improving and along with these changes come new policies and regulations that teachers must be aware of. In order to provide the best instruction to our students, teachers must stay up-to-date on new mandates placed upon education. These mandates can come from the local, state, or federal level and may the impact current teaching practices. Educators should be aware of how to find new information and be knowledgeable of the policies related to the field of education. This information can be found in school handbooks, newsletters, official websites, and even further explained and discussed in online communities educators may choose to join.
The artifact that shows how I am aware of these policies is a piece I’ve selected from www.dese.mo.gov. This is the official website of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. On the home page are the latest updates of policies effecting education along with other links that allow the user to find information quickly. The portion shown for this artifact is regarding the Common Core Standards and tells when they will go into effect as well as what they will be focused on. Having knowledge of these policy changes allows me to consider how I will adjust my teaching to make sure I am meeting the needs of my students and I am better able to prepare them for what they will be expected to do.
