2.3 coordinating and supporting the efforts of volunteers, paraprofessionals, and classroom teachers
Educators are often asked to collaborate and work together by sharing a classroom, grade level, or students with other educators. In order for this to be effective and increase student learning, there must be clear communication between teachers. This can be done by explaining philosophies and beliefs and setting up clear expectations for everyone involved. If everyone knows what role they are expected to fill then all necessary tasks will be completed and important things won’t be left undone. Defining roles and expectations in the beginning of a school year can lead to a positive working relationship that everyone benefits from all year long.
The artifact I used to show how best to work with a paraprofessional, volunteer, or other classroom teacher is an article titled Working With the Paraprofessional in Your Classroom by Dr. Barry Ziff. It is about how one teacher established a good working relationship and clear expectations when working with a paraprofessional in a special education setting. The steps that this teacher took can be applied when working with any other educator in a variety of settings. In order to best serve the students, teachers must understand their role and be able to function collaboratively and support each other. Using these steps and setting up open communication allows for the most conducive environment for learning.
