2.4 selecting and using a wide range of curriculum materials, including children’s and young adult literature and instructional enhancement materials (e.g., related literature, primary source documents, artifacts, etc.), appropriate for learners at differing stages of development and from differing cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
There are many different materials that can be included in a literacy curriculum. Technology provides access to many things that weren’t available before, so students who have differing learning styles or differing backgrounds can get extra support. For instance, to build background knowledge or vocabulary, it might be good to find some information, a picture, or a short video clip that goes along with a nonfiction book prior to reading it. This will help the student understand the information in the book when they are reading. Other types of documents to support learning and provide different perspectives or additional information on a topic can also be found online. There are different types of things available to enhance instruction, such as websites that let you organize information and websites that focus on specific reading skills like letter recognition. Literature can also be purchased and read on a technological device which can be motivating for kids and makes books more accessible. Bringing in different types of materials to teach from and to allow kids to use can provide support for kids who may be struggling and also provide extension for kids who need an extra challenge.
The first artifact I chose is a response that I wrote for discussion board about using technology in the classroom. I took a class about adding technology to the literacy curriculum and this response talks about reasons why this is beneficial. In this response I refer to research as well as identify some specific sites to use. The next artifact I chose was created during the same class. It is a Decision Framework describing how I will integrate technology into my curriculum and how each aspect of literacy will be addressed through this integration. In addition to this, I've also listed the different types of learning needs that would be supported through these specific types of technology. The third artifact is a response I wrote to a blog that I read about comprehension. This response describes how an alternative approach (technology) is beneficial to reading comprehension and extends to include comprehension in other content areas. Using different materials and methods to teach is an effective way to reach learners who have different needs and come from different backgrounds. The artifacts included describe ways to use different materials to teach reading in the classroom.
