6. Organizing Strategies for Reading and Writing Instruction
There are many different approaches to choose from when organizing reading and writing instruction. Some of these approaches focus more on explicit instruction of skills (i.e. Basal series, Reading Recovery), while others focus more on embedding this instruction into authentic reading and writing (ie. Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop, Literature-Based). Some approaches may allow a teacher to do both of these things when appropriate (i.e. Technology-Based). When choosing which approach to use, a teacher needs to be aware of their own beliefs and alignment with different theories of reading instruction. Student needs and district policies should also be considered when organizing strategies for reading and writing instruction. Regardless of a teacher’s beliefs, it’s essential to be aware of many different approaches and the supporting research in order to choose the one that best fits the needs of the teacher and students.
