6.3: Reading Recovery
Reading Recovery is a program that targets first graders who are significantly behind in reading level. Each student is worked with individually for 30 minutes a day for an amount of time ranging from 12-20 weeks. At the end of this time, 75% of these kids are reading on grade level and are able to work in the regular classroom with no extra help needed. One of the things that makes Reading Recovery so successful in such a short period of time is the rigorous training that implementors must go through. They receive a year of training before being qualified to act as a Reading Recovery teacher. In addition to this, they continue receiving professional development. Teachers implement specific lessons daily including piecing together a cut up story, writing, word work focusing on phonemic awareness, and reading from books carefully chosen to fit the student. Reading Recovery is a very focused intervention program that has proven to have positive results in reading achievement.
The artifact I chose is information taken from the Reading Recovery website. This information explains how Reading Recovery is set up and the how it works. It also describes some of the lessons that are part of the intervention. Even if a school is not participating in the Reading Recovery program, it is still beneficial to be knowledgeable about this information because some of these ideas may be incorporated into other programs. The website includes a lot of additional information, but I’ve included what I consider to be an overview of the program and some of the most important ideas in this artifact.
