4.2 using a large supply of books, technology-based information, and nonprint materials representing multiple levels, broad interests, and cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
A variety of materials should be used to teach reading. There are many different types of book award lists that can help guide a teacher when helping a student choose a book. There are also many reviews that can be found online from individuals who have read the book as well as reviews from magazines and journals. These can be used to help a teacher make sure that materials span across levels and include many interests as well as cultural and linguistic backgrounds. It’s important to expose students to different types of text so they can discover new things they are interested in and have resources to learn more about things they are already interested in. Bringing in a large supply of material that comes from different cultures can also help students connect with text that may include ideas or language from their own cultural background. Technology based information also presents many opportunities for a student to access materials at multiple levels, relating to broad interests and cultural and linguistic backgrounds. It allows them to use this information in a new way and go beyond written text to many different types of communication and comprehension. Students can interact with the technology and be involved in a way that may not be possible with written text.
I have several artifacts to show how I provide a large supply of materials in my classroom. The first artifact is a Reflective Essay that I wrote which focuses on my thoughts about the importance of good books. In this essay, I discuss how being exposed to many different kinds of good text can help make a student successful when learning to read in school. The second artifact is an assignment I completed for a comprehension class. I had to look at a piece of art and read it. I then wrote a response, which is included in the artifact, and took that response to create a wordle to see what really stood out to me about that piece of art. It was different to read art instead of text, but I found myself using many of the same strategies that I typically used while reading text. This was a powerful thing for me to experience so that I can use different forms of reading to teach comprehension strategies in my classroom. Another artifact I included is a Decision Framework I created for a Curricular Decisions for Literacy in a Digital World class that I took. During this class I evaluated technology that was focused on literacy. This framework shows the results of some of the evaluations I made and how I would implement using this technology in the classroom. It explains how each technology supports the different aspects of literacy. Additional artifacts that are included are book lists for the Show-Me Awards, Mark Twain Awards, and Truman Awards. I use these lists to help make sure that I have a variety of books in my classroom that are at different levels and address a broad range of topics. These lists also include reviews that I can reference when needing information about a certain book.
