About the Core Academic Standards
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards for English-language arts and mathematics, which were released June 2, 2010, were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators and experts.
The standards:
In January and February of 2011, the Department provided a series of regional workshops throughout the state to familiarize educators with the English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics Common Core State Standards (CCSS), and their alignment with the current v2.0 Grade-Level Expectations (GLEs) and Course-Level Expectations (CLEs). The link below includes both general and content specific videos and power points from those meetings along with ancillary materials such as crosswalks and commonalities between the CCSS and the GLEs/CLEs.
National PTA Releases Parent Guides
The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) released guides on the Common Core State Standards for parents. These guides aim to empower parents to work with district leaders to ensure the standards are implemented effectively.

- Are aligned with college and work expectations
- Are clear, understandable and consistent
- Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills
- Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards
- Are informed by other top performing countries so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society
- Are evidence-based.
