5.2 professional organizations that support reading and writing instruction (e.g., International Reading Association, National Council of Teachers of English, Missouri Council of IRA, Missouri Association of Teachers of English)
There are many organizations available to support teachers of literacy. Many of these organizations can be accessed online and provide resources to keep teachers up-to-date on new polices and strategies for literacy education. Through these organizations, there are also opportunities to make contacts with fellow teachers to collaborate and share ideas for teaching. Being a member of an educational organization is empowering because so many rich resources can be gained and teachers can find valuable support.
The first artifact is a link to the International Reading Association’s website. This link specifically links to a page that gives access to special interest groups. I thought this was the most useful part of this website because it can take you directly to the area you are interested in. The content in each of these groups is focused on specific area of teaching. As a second artifact, I’ve included a brochure for the TAWL conference to show that in addition to online organizations, there are also organizations holding conferences that allow for teachers to meet with other professionals to help enhance literacy education.
