1. Foundations of Language and Literacy
Foundations of language and literacy are important for all reading teachers to understand. These foundations are the building blocks of any reader. If a strong foundation is not achieved, then a student will likely be in for a long struggle with reading. When examining these building blocks of reading I see that there are many different components to building a literacy foundation with any student. A teacher must understand all of the different aspects of reading and how they work together in order to effectively help a student. Knowing how cultural and linguistic background affect the elements of reading can allow a teacher to plan instruction that is the most beneficial for a student. Understanding the history of reading instruction and the different theories lets the teacher examine which practices have been successful and which ones were not. It’s essential to take all things possible into consideration when teaching foundations of language and literacy, this includes the student’s cultural and linguistic background, language development, major components of reading, elements of the reading process, and historical and contemporary developments in reading instruction.
