3. Assessment, Diagnosis, and Evaluation
Assessment is an important part of any curriculum, but it is not enough just to assess students, those assessments must be put to use in guiding instruction. Assessments should be chosen for the purpose of finding out as much as possible about students and be used to determine their strengths and needs in a certain area. They can also determine if students are showing growth with the current type of instruction or if some instructional changes may be needed to reach desired results. Various types of assessments are useful because some are more formal and give standardized results, while others are more informal and can be done quickly during regular classroom instruction to show how a student is performing. In addition to using assessments in order to guide teaching, they should also be used to communicate a student’s progress with other teachers, administrators, and parents. By collaborating with other educators and parents, a clear understanding of a student’s current level of performance can be determined and strategies that will the most beneficial and appropriate for the student can be implemented.
